Soliloquies Anthology is looking for vibrant, unpublished poetry and prose in English by emerging and established authors. We want smart, confident work, from a variety of locations, backgrounds, perspectives and schools.

Who Can Submit?

In order to best highlight local and emerging artists, we are currently only accepting submissions from ‘Canadian’ writers. However, given the deeply colonial history (and present) of the region, we will accept a broad definition of ‘Canadian,’ including but perhaps not limited to:

• Indigenous peoples from Turtle Island, who may or may not identify as citizens of what is colonially known as Canada or reside within its boundaries
• Anyone with a Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, living within the country or abroad
• Anyone that currently resides in ‘Canada,’ regardless of citizenship status or identification with that status
• Anyone that holds a Canadian work permit, or that is temporarily employed by Canadian organizations, such as seasonal agricultural workers
• Anyone currently studying at a Canadian institution, be it in-person or remotely

Soliloquies Anthology is also committed to publishing diverse perspectives and experiences. It would be a privilege to feature emerging writers of all ages, folks who are traditionally underrepresented/marginalized, including creators who are Indigenous, Black, racialized, Disabled, 2SLGBTQQIPAA+, and/or are otherwise affected by structural inequality, such as immigrants, survivors of assault, and anyone subject to marginalization due to class, age, and/or current or former incarceration.

In order for us to make good on our mandate, we encourage you to share with us as much as you would like to, knowing this information will be held in confidence and will be used solely to help us uphold our mandate. This information isn’t requested for your bio or the other required fields; if you include any personal details in the “Additional Comments & Feedback” section of the Submittable form, we’ll make sure they remain confidential.

Blind Submissions

Important to note is that we read submissions blind. This means our editors do not know the name of the person whose work they are evaluating when they encounter it for the first time. We believe this is necessary to maintain equity in a small university department. Therefore, if you put your name in the "Additional Comments and Feedback" section or anywhere else on your submission document (such as in the header or title), we will have to automatically disqualify your submission. You may only put your name in your bio and at the top of the Submittable form.

What Work May Be Submitted?

Presently, we only accept unpublished works of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Poetry and prose submissions may include multiple pieces; each new piece must begin on a new page and the submission must adhere to the following page or word count:

• Poetry: Up to four poems; max. 5 pages
• Fiction: Up to two pieces; max. 3500 words
• Creative Nonfiction: Up to two pieces; max. 3500 words

While we welcome different styles and genres of writing, as well as a variety of subjects, work that is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, gratuitously violent, or otherwise harmful will not be tolerated and will be immediately rejected.

We allow simultaneous submissions, but kindly ask that authors notify us immediately if their work is accepted elsewhere. Soliloquies Anthology retains First North American Serial Rights, and the right to reproduce any work in our print publication online. Rights revert to authors after publication.

Note that when the journal is produced, writing is formatted within a 4.5 by 7 inch space. Please consider how these parameters will affect the presentation of the work you are submitting. Due to the short window between our deadline and printing date, formatting may be done by the design team, without the author’s consultation.

**NEW** Ars Poetica Poetry Contest 

Definition: an ars poetica poem is a poem examining the role of poets themselves as subjects, their relationships to the poem, and the act of writing. (https://poets.org/glossary/ars-poetica)

Soliloquies Anthology wants to know what poetry means to you in order to make a mini time capsule that documents the state of the form today.

This contest takes place during our submission period, but please use the separate contest Submittable form rather than the general poetry form to submit your work. Do not submit ars poetica poetry in the general poetry link.

We will be selecting five winners to be published in the anthology along with our regular submissions. The winners will receive a gift card and an invitation to read at our launch event in spring 2023.

How to Submit

Submit electronically through our Submittable account at soliloquies.submittable.com/submit. Upload your submission in .docx or .doc format. Include your contact information, the title(s) of your piece(s), any potential trigger warnings, and a brief biographical statement written in the third person.​ The author’s name and any identifying information should not appear anywhere on the manuscript.

Notice: If you are a Concordia or Montreal-based author, we ask you to please check the boxes pertaining to this in your submission, as we try to highlight local authors and take this into consideration when preparing the anthology for publication.
